Seals carved in soapstone

The Inuit People of Greenland and of Canada create small-scale sculpture in a variety of materials such as whalebone, antler and serpentine. In a softer material, soapstone, they carve birds, caribou, walrus and seals. Thanks to the generous gift of the Roepke's, the OAC has many examples of Inuit carvings, two of which are shown below. They are approximately 3"x3"x2" and were carved by the Inuit artist, Elli, of Port Harrison, Canada.
