OZ Press (the studio of Alice Ottinger and Jean Zamboni)
OZ Press, produced Christmas cards and serigraphs for almost 40 years. They named
their private press using their own initials, and Alice designed the logo they used
on their cards and their larger very limited edition serigraphs.
Alice Ottinger was born in Chaska, Minnesota in 1922, graduated from high school
there, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, attended courses at the Minneapolis
College of Art and Design, the U. of M, the Grand Marais Art Colony, and received
her MS from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
Jean Zamboni is a native of Owatonna, Minnesota. Born here in 1924 she attended OHS,
received her BS in Art Education from Winona State Teachers College, and her MA from
the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota.
The two met at Mankato State University after having taught in a variety of Minnesota
public schools. They bought the letterpress and set up their print shop in the basement
of Alice's house in Mankato in 1964. Their first silkscreen prints were greeting card
size. The verses were written and handset in type by Jean and Alice, and they
collaborated on the silkscreened card fronts. The editions were small.
