Kurt Kowatsch was born in Breslau, Germany in 1913. His wife Kate was a weaver, and they participated in many seminars in Germany to study religious art. They fled Germany in 1949, and arrived in Owatonna in 1957. Kurt was a metalcraftsman, welder and artist who owned and ran a shop for many years at 208 Mineral Springs Road in Owatonna. He created functional and art objects with the metalcraft techniques of forging, repousse, and welding. Both Kate and Kurt have pieces in a Berlin Museum, Pressischer Kuntschatz.

(Breslau, Germany is now Wroclaw, Poland.)
