Sarah Heimann earned a B.A. in History and Women's Studies from
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1988. She then attended the
Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina with the accreditation as
Core Student, Ceramics from 1989-1990. From 1991-1992, she attended the
University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as Resident
Artist, Ceramics and then in 1997, Sarah earned a Master of Fine Arts
degree at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Sarah says of her work, "I try to react to each stage of my
work. While building or throwing a piece, my focus is making a solid
form--one that has good bones. As the clay dries to a
leather-hard condition, each piece is
transformed into a canvas. I draw on the surface, using studio plants
as models. In carving, I refine the drawing and accentuate tensions in
the pot's form. I am interested in the way a leaf and stem can wrap
around a form, the way a pattern can re-form an underlying carving."
Sarah Heimann created the "Covered Bowl With Chair Knob"
from 06 white stoneware in 2001. Sarah Heimann resides in Lebanon, NH.
