The Sculpture Garden
Meant to be a respite of peace and quietude within the City,
the Sculpture Garden at West Hills is a well-used area for citizens and City workers.
Throughout
the walks and grassy paths are scattered pieces of sculpture by artists of renown. Whether
you decide to have lunch at one of the available tables under the trees on a warm day, or
do your walking exercise on the sidewalks throughout on a more wintry day,
[click here for wintry views] you will always
come away with a composed feeling from your trip through this park-like setting.
The Sculpture Garden was established in 1979 with direction and development by the OAC, with
the design by Brooks Gavin, architect, and landscape design by Karen Olmstead. The completed
work was then gifted to the City of Owatonna who has taken over its upkeep.
Borders and Beds
OAC is fortunate to have a group of gardeners who are dedicated to keeping the plantings surrounding our
building attractive for the enjoyment of the public.
In one of our gardens to the north side of the building can be found not only an
appealing variety of plants, but also a replica weathervane from a c.1859 St. Paul
building, the Winslow House Hotel. The original weathervane is in the collection of
the Hennepin County Historical Society, and is on loan to the Minneapolis Institute of
Arts. The design is the copyrighted logo of the Hennepin County Historical Society, whose
most generous permission was granted to us for the fabrication of our full sized replica.
